15 - 30 MINUTE PAIN RELIEF SESSIONS

Ear Acupressure, Trigger Point Therapy or Auriculotherapy is the stimulation of the external surface of the ear (auricle) to alleviate pain, spasm, and many other conditions in the body using specific points on the ear. Although originally based on the acupuncture the correspondence of the specific points on the ear to other parts of the body  was developed first in France.

It was Paul Nogier, a Lyons physician, whose success with sciatic treatment of the auricle led to the discovery of the ear as a map resembling an upside down fetus. Using this map and varied methods of ear points stimulation he was able to obtain relief from a host of issues.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Auriculotherapy is based on remote reflexes and auricular-somatic reflexes. According to the micro-system theory there is a direct connection between the nerves from the ear surfaces to reflex centers in the brain.  The brain then sends signals to different parts of the body known as remote reflexes. Auricular-Somatic, or ear-body reflexes are the manifestation of localized changes in tenderness, circulation and electrodermal reactivity of the auricle produced by an issue originating in a specific part of the body.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM ACUPUNCTURE?
Auriculotherapy comes with a different perspective. The focus is on the auricle as a localizes reflex system or micro system that is connected to the central nervous system instead of a point on a meridian or energy channel as in acupuncture. Micro system meaning the auricle is one part of the body representing  the whole body. Specific points are stimulated by applying a small bead or seed on a inconspicuous piece of adhesive, without breaking the skin, to the external ear reflex point.

WHAT HEALTH CONDITIONS ARE HELPED MOST, AND HOW ARE THEY RELIEVED?
There is a wide range of conditions that can be relieved and almost all conditions can be affected to some degree.  The most commonly reported are chronic pain, relief of nausea, anxiety and depression, reduction of hypertension, detoxification to name a few.  Though this reflex system pain relief is accomplish in two ways. 1. irritated nerves are calmed by normalizing hypersensitive reflex pathways. 2. we know through human and animal studies,  that endorphins are released into the blood stream, helping to reduce pain and create a sense of well being.

HOW LONG DOES A SESSION LAST?
Typically the first session will include an intake of information and last the longest, roughly 45 to 60 minutes, after that, sessions may last 15 to 30 minutes depending on clients needs.

HOW MANY SESSION ARE NECESSARY?
The number of sessions is dependent on a client's needs, severity of condition and the bodies response rate. It is common that the severity of most conditions can be reduces by 4 to 6 sessions and greatly alleviated by 8 to 12 week sessions. Typically sessions begin at 1 or more per week for several weeks. Frequency then progressively decreases to either a maintenance or per diem schedule dependent client needs.

HOW LONG DO BENEFITS LAST?
The range of response can be quite varied. For example, it is common with severe pain to notice a mild to moderate reduction on the first visit, with effects continuing for several hours and beginning to subside after several days. With successive treatment the degree and duration of relief progressively extends. There is also the possibility that benefits may last several weeks after just one  or two sessions. It all depends on the severity of the condition and the individual response to the therapy.

ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS OR SIDE EFFECTS?
There are few contraindications. It is important that we not treat any pain that may be necessary to diagnose an underlying condition, pain needed to limit the range of motion of an injured areas or pregnant women. Because ear point tenderness is one of the primary diagnostic features a side affect may be increased soreness of a stimulated point. This may continue for a hour or more the subside. Lengthy telephone use or side sleeping may also increase tenderness. There may be an experience of fatigue after session, this is normal reaction for some and may last for a few hours before subsiding.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY 'EAR SEEDS'?
The adhesive used to attach the seed will be good for 3 to 4 days, after that remove the adhesive patch making sure the seed is still attached, and discarded. You may shower with them on being careful not to touch them until they have dried. If there has been plenty of drying time after showering and a seeds feel 'gummy' the adhesive is no longer viable and need to be removed. If thee is prolonged tenderness, as mentioned under side effects, of a point that cannot be tolerated simply remove that seed and discard it. you can also increase the stimulation of a point by applying gentle pressure to the seeds a few times a day, use care not to over stimulated as this may lead to uncomfortable tenderness of the point.
